Working with Machinery
There are many hazards when working with machinery on a vessel –whether on deck, or in the Engine Room. Below are some of the basic precautions:
- Follow all the safety requirements applicable to the machine.
- Never put your hands in the machines while they are running.
- Let the supervisor / engineer know if any maintenance is required or breakdowns occur.
- Don’t wear loose clothing or jewellery while operating machinery.
- Only trained crew (or those being trained by a supervisor) may operate machinery.
- Ensure the protective guards are in place prior to operating / starting the machinery.
- Never clean any electrical fittings with high pressure water. If electrical wires / fittings are exposed, DO NOT TOUCH, and inform the supervisor / engineer.
- Make sure that crew are clear of danger if you are operating machinery e.g. hydraulic and pneumatic doors etc.
- Don’t point water blasting equipment at any crew, whether the equipment’s going or not.
- Don’t run in the engine room.
- Don’t start hydraulics if crew are working / cleaning in the area.
- In the event of a hydraulic leak, stop hydraulic pumps, inform supervisor / engineer and leave the area immediately.
- Notify supervisor / engineer immediately of any faulty grating.
- Always keep hands away from discharge / air intake or outlets on machines.
- In the event of a complete power shut down, remain at work stations; look for exit signs, and wait for instructions.
- Always wear the required PPE.
