Working with Hazardous Substances
There are many hazards when working with hazardous substances / chemicals / dangerous materials on any vessel – whether on deck, or in the Engine Room. Below are some of the basic precautions:
- Always read the labels, the user guide and the safety-information form for the relevant substances before starting work with hazardous substances. Obey all relevant instructions.
- Consult the Skipper or supervisor if there’s anything unclear about the safety of working with hazardous substances.
- Check out the operational first aid requirements for the chemicals. The necessary first aid items must be at hand as well as the necessary personal protection equipment. If an accident should occur while working with hazardous substances and further medical treatment is necessary, documentation of the hazardous substances must be outlined to the medical experts contacted.
- The mixing of hazardous substances must be carried out as per written instructions.
- Always maintain hygiene standards when working with hazardous substances – wash hands after finishing or interrupting work with hazardous substances. Don’t eat while working with these substances.
- Ensure sufficient ventilation.
- Smoking and open fire is forbidden. When working with hazardous substances where there is risk of fire and / or explosion, suitable fire-fighting equipment must be available in the working area. Ensure chemicals are stored in the designated chemical store.
- Always ensure that the safety information (MSDS product safety sheet) supplied with the chemical is studied and all precautions followed when chemicals are being used for cleaning or other treatments.
- If possible change chemicals to a less hazardous type.
