Safety Representative
The Safety Representative forms the link between the crew and Skipper in matters related to health and safety. The safety rep is charged with a number of specific functions (or tasks) in carrying out the requirements of this appointment, including:
- Doing inspections of the vessel / workplace
- Assisting with investigating accidents
- Implementing the necessary standards
- Promoting the health & safety message
The Safety Rep must be given full training in all aspects of the task. Active commitment from the Skipper / Owner is also essential for optimum functioning of the safety rep system.
Safety Committee
A SafetyCommittee is one of the best methods of obtaining joint consultation on the common ground of health and safety. A committee should have status and its member’s appointments should be approved by the Skipper / Owner.
The primary functions of a health and safety committee are to initiate, develop, promote, maintain & review measures to ensure the health & safety of crew members while at work. Meetings should be held regularly (preferably at monthly intervals) anda formal record of proceedings kept indicating the responsibility for remedial action and completion date.
Whenever possible, the Skipper should attend the safety committee meetings. In any event, the minutes are required to be signed off by the Skipper or Owner.
