Selection / Placement Standards
Before a new crew member is hired, it’s necessary that the exact requirements of the job are clearly determined. A job specification profile (also called a “Man / Job” profile)highlights the general physical and mental characteristics required of the prospective employee, and should be completed for each position. This is then used in conjunction with the medical report to ensure that the most suitable person is selected to join the vessel.
Medical Examinations
The Man / Job (Position) Description should make it quite clear what the physical and mental requirements for the job are. The applicant may then be required to undergo a health screening or physical capability test before a job offer is made. The information provided to the health professional should state the nature of the work in detail and ask “is the person fit to undertake the work and not put themselves or others at risk.”
Periodic medical examinations play a vital role in the early detection of occupational or work-related diseases or illnesses before they can assume serious proportions. They also serve to highlight a lack of enforcement or absence of safety rules and procedures, resulting in dangers to health.
