Watertight Integrity
A vessel has to be watertight. But because most vessels are fitted with numerous openings above and below decks, its watertight integrity can be compromised.
The following guidelines should be followed at all times:
- Watertight integrity is absolutely critical – even in calm conditions.
- Unless being used, all openings must be closed and secured. This is particularly important during adverse weather and sea conditions.
- Closures on side openings must be watertight and as strong as the surrounding structure.
- Reinforce the requirement to close valves, doors, etc. when not in use by posting notices at prominent places. The person who opens a watertight closure is responsible for ensuring that it is re-closed at the earliest possible opportunity.
- Inspect all closures and dogs at regular intervals. Grease liberally to ensure that they are ready for use, and maintain gaskets in good condition.
- Report any defects in watertight or weather-tight closures immediately.
