Steering, Rudder & Propulsion Systems
- If possible, ensure that there are two effective means of steering, i.e. a main steering gear and an auxiliary or emergency system.
- Test all equipment regularly.
- Post instructions for its use – especially under emergency conditions.
- There should be means of centering and steading the rudder in an emergency – block and tackle, chain falls, restraining lines or another suitable should be carried aboard. Practice using these.
- Make sure there is an effective way of passing steering orders between the wheelhouse and any other location intended for control of the main or auxiliary steering gear.
- Permanently mark all switches, valves and other steering components to show their purpose and operation.
- Lock all nuts on rudder and propeller fittings in place.
- Inspect rudder and propeller gear for signs of wear at annual dry-dockings. Stern gland packing must be properly installed and regularly inspected for leaking or overheating.
- Grease propeller shaft bearings regularly. Oil levels in housing kept at correct levels at all times.
- Fit, and regularly check high temperature alarms on shaft housings.
