Fish Processing Spaces
Working in fish processing spaces can be particularly hazardous, particularly in bad weather. So it is important to observe the following guidelines:
- Always maintain safe and free access to all machinery and equipment.
- Ensure that all fish-filleting machines (Baader and similar), electric motors, gearing, conveyors, chain and belt drives, friction clutches, shafting and other machinery are securely fenced or guarded – without impeding the efficient and safe operation of the equipment.
- Make sure hot surfaces are insulated. Protect hot surfaces from contract with flammable liquids and other combustible materials.
- “Emergency Stop” switches are an important component of safety in processing spaces. Ensure that there are enough available – and clearly visible– at all areas where crewmembers may need to stop machinery in an emergency.
- Permanently mark all machinery controls, gauges, pumping systems, valves, cocks, air-pipes, inlets, sounding pipes, switches, etc., to show their purpose. Mark the direction of closure on hand-wheels.
- Secure machinery or heavy pieces of equipment to prevent movement in heavy seas.
- Keep fish processing space deck plates, ladders, handrails, etc. free from grease and oil. Make sure that there are handrails or hand holds around all machinery platforms.
- Secure deck plates – and make sure they have a non-slip surface. Non-slip treads are likewise needed for processing space ladders. Include adequate handrails.
- Ensure an efficient communication system between the various areas –and the system must be audible over machinery noise.
- Make sure periodically unattended processing spaces are provided with proper alarm detection and machinery and control systems.
