Irrespective of the vessels or the organisation’s size, the safety policy is the starting point and must be developed and committed to.
Generally, there will be a commitment to at least the following:
- Complying with all applicable legislation and standards, and where these do not exist, adopting and applying standards that reflect the organisation’s commitment to HSE.
- Involving management, employees and contractors in the improvement of HSE performance.
- Training and holding individual employees accountable for their area of responsibility.
- Managing risk by implementing management systems to identify, assess, monitor and control hazards and by reviewing performance on a regular basis.
- Ensuring that all employees are informed of and understand their obligations in respect of this policy, including the need at all times to be free-of the influence of drugs and alcohol while on company premises / vessels or involved in any way in company business.
- Seeking continuous improvement in its HSE performance taking into account evolving employee expectations, management practices, scientific knowledge and technology.
Policies are to be signed by the Vessel Owner, and the Skipper, dated, and reviewed on a regular basis.
