Fire Fighting Equipment
- There should be enough extinguishers, hoses, hydrants and fixed CO2systems provided to deal with various types of fire hazards on the vessel.
- This equipment must be the correct type for the fire risk identified.
- The fire extinguishers and extinguishing equipment should be located close to likely fire hazards but not so close as to be damaged or obstructed from use due to a fire.
- All fire extinguishers and extinguishing equipment should be suitably identified and labelled.
- Regular inspection of equipment is essential. The results of these inspections should be recorded in a suitable register. Damaged or discharged equipment must be replaced as soon as possible.
- The location of fire extinguishers and extinguishing equipment should be quickly and easily identifiable in an emergency. A conspicuous location marker should be positioned as high up as possible above the equipment to prevent the sign from being obscured by e.g. pipes, barriers, etc. in front of the equipment.
- To ensure that fire extinguishers and extinguishing equipment is always readily accessible, a "keep clear" area should be demarcated or maintained beneath the equipment.
