Anchor & Mooring Equipment
Serious injury could result to anyone falling onto moving chains or mooring ropes.
- Install guards or barriers should be installed where possible in these areas. If this can’t be done, prohibit persons working or being in the vicinity when the anchor or mooring winch is in operation.
- Make sure that the brakes, clutches, bearings, controls and structure of anchor winches are maintained in good condition at all times. Failure could result in serious injuries to crewmembers.
- Ensure that the winch can be stopped quickly in an emergency. This may have to be from another position other than the normal control position. Factor in the particular layout and operations on your vessel and assess how likely it is that serious injury or vessel damage will occur.
- Always fit emergency stop switches / facilities.
- Never disable controls – if there is a problem with the correct functioning of any lever, switch, button, etc., report and correct as soon as possible.
- Keep all components of the anchoring and mooring systems in good condition and check regularly. Ropes, chains and anchors must be kept in good condition with little or no wear evident.
