Lighting
General lighting standards include:
- Sufficient lighting (natural and artificial) to allow for safe working conditions is needed in all work spaces, passageways, doors and access ways –especially for night work and in emergencies.
- Report any defective lights immediately.
- There should also be adequate emergency lighting at all points on the vessel and the working of this should be checked on a regular basis.
Ventilation
General ventilation standards include:
- Adequate ventilation is important especially in areas where toxic or irritating fumes may be released. This is particularly important in engine rooms, machinery rooms, or any other areas where irritating mists, biological agents etc. are present.
- Regularly measure the air velocities and ‘air changes’ to ensure that sufficient ventilation exists.
- Regularly check the electrical and mechanical component of the ventilation system - keep in good condition.
