Lifting Gear
Always follow these basic rules:
- Only trained people to operate hoisting / lifting equipment.
- Use standardised hoisting signals at all times.
- Slings, hooks, chains and cables should be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person – record findings in a register.
- Prevent overloading –determine the load mass in relation to the equipment.
- Keep are around suspended loads clear.
- Don’t ride on a load or hook.
- Check and maintain automatic safety devices regularly.
- Clearly mark the SWL on all lifting equipment.
- Protect slings against sharp angles – use flexible elements or tubular shells.
- Avoid overloading and shocks.
- Always check slings and accessories before and after use.
- Inform the Skipper /supervisor about any wear or damage.
Lifting equipment (wires, ropes, shackles, fittings, etc.) will eventually wear or corrode and may fail when high loads occur. This can result in serious injuries or even fatalities. Ensure that all lifting gear is well maintained and correctly sized.
- Shackles: permanently attached shackles should be the locking type or should be "moused" or secured against accidental opening.
- Hooks: new hooks are also stamped with their safe working loads. For heavy loads, substitute shackles – these are generally stronger.
- Chain Hoists: as a safety measure, the lower hook is designed as the weakest part. This means the hook will start to spread before the hoist is overloaded. Replace as soon as spreading or wear is found. Distortion of the links in the chain means the lift has been overloaded and is probably unsafe for further use.
