Emergency Plan
No vessel is immune to natural or man-made disasters such as flooding, fire, explosions, gale force winds, collision, etc. Every vessel should therefore have an organised emergency programme, tailored to its particular needs. The programme must be under the control of the Skipper and other senior officers if needed.
A plan must exist for corrective action to be taken in case of at least the following emergency situations:
- Fire
- Accidents to crew
- Collisions
- Man overboard
- Flooding
- Oil spills
- Abandon ship
- Electrical blackout
Each plan must address the following for each type of emergency which may occur:
- Responsibilities
- Procedures to be followed
- Facilities and equipment required
- Emergency teams
- Training
- Testing and maintenance of equipment
